Canada’s independent insurance experts

Canada’s insurance companies, rated on the evidence.

We score Canada’s insurers 0–100 — The Expert Score — on verified financial strength, coverage fine print and real value. Every figure traces to a source, and when a company’s claim doesn’t survive the check, we say so.

What do you need to insure?

We rate insurers separately for each type of insurance, because the right company for your car isn’t always the right one for your home or life. All five are live and scored on the same six pillars.

Why trust us

An insurance rating you can actually audit

We’re not a lead-gen page dressed up as advice. Here’s the standard behind every score and every word on this site.

01

Verified, not vibes

Financial strength comes straight from AM Best and DBRS, with the rating and date shown. If we can’t verify a figure, we flag it — we never invent one.

02

We read the fine print

We analyse insurers’ actual policy wordings with AI to judge coverage breadth, exclusions and claims-friendliness — the detail most comparison sites skip.

03

No fake rankings

Canada has no current J.D. Power satisfaction ranking (it ended in 2019). We won’t relabel old data as new — honesty is the whole point of a rating you trust with money.

04

Editorially independent

Affiliate commissions keep the site free but never move a score or a position. An insurer we earn nothing from can — and does — outrank one we do.

Every score traces to a source, and every insurer’s rating carries the agency and date behind it.

Good to know

Choosing an insurance company in Canada

Is there a single best insurance company in Canada?

No — and any site that tells you otherwise is guessing. The right company depends on what you’re insuring, where you live, and whether you value price, coverage or service most. That’s why we don’t crown a winner: we rate insurers on the evidence and let you choose. For car insurance, Intact rates highest on our Expert Score at 86.2/100, on the strength of Canada’s strongest verified financials and largest claims network — but the right company for you is the one that scores well on the pillar that matters most to your situation.

How do I choose an insurance company in Canada?

Look past the sticker price at four things: (1) financial strength — can they actually pay claims? Check independent AM Best or DBRS ratings. (2) Coverage terms — what’s included and excluded in the policy wording. (3) Value — discounts and telematics programs you’ll genuinely use. (4) How you buy — broker, direct/online, or group through your employer — and whether they operate in your province. We score every insurer on exactly these.

Are Canadian insurance companies safe and regulated?

Yes. Insurers are regulated federally by OSFI and by provincial regulators (like FSRA in Ontario or the AMF in Quebec) for conduct and rates. If a company fails, industry-funded backstops protect policyholders — PACICC for home and auto, Assuris for life and health. We add a further check: we only present financial-strength ratings we can verify from an independent agency.

What’s the difference between an insurance broker, a direct insurer, and a group insurer?

A broker quotes several insurers for you and isn’t tied to one company. A direct (or online) insurer sells you its own policies straight, with no middleman — often cheaper but you compare yourself. A group insurer offers exclusive rates only if your employer, union or association partners with it. Each insurer we review is clearly labelled by how you can actually buy from it.

Is the cheapest insurance company the right choice?

Not always. The lowest quote can come with thinner coverage, a higher deductible, or an insurer whose ability to pay claims we can’t verify. That’s why our Expert Score weighs coverage terms and financial strength above price — the cheapest policy is no bargain if it doesn’t pay when you need it.

How does InsuranceXpert rate insurance companies?

We score each company 0–100 across six weighted pillars: coverage & terms (25%), financial strength (20%), customer satisfaction (20%), value (15%), digital experience (12%) and availability (8%). Each insurance type is scored separately, because a company strong at life can be mid-pack at travel. Financial strength comes from verified AM Best, DBRS, S&P and Moody’s ratings with the date shown; coverage from reading the actual policy wordings. We never invent a rating, and no company has ever paid to move.
